Rehabilitation of Tatum, the Dachshund

Tatum is a cute little dachshund mix. Unfortunately, these long, little bodies are susceptible to a condition in the spine that can cause paralysis to the hind end. Tatum began showing signs of discomfort, shaky legs, and loss of appetite. This occurs so suddenly that his owner, Florence, took him to the vet. While in the office, they put him in a crate and his hind end collapsed. The vet said that he had succumbed to this paralysis problem.

Aleta happened to be in the large dog park with her dog when she heard loud screaming next door in the small dog park area. Her friends were telling her to quickly go next door – a dog was in trouble and needed her.

She ran over and a distraught Florence was crying that Tatum had been walking around and then collapsed behind.

Aleta speaks: “At first, I didn’t know what happened, but Florence handed him to me. No response behind. His back legs hung like wet noodles.

My first intent as I massaged his butt and legs was to see if there was any response. Absolutely no reaction.

I began to work the spine and legs with no luck but added more pressure along the spine since that is where all the nerves come through.

I must tell you; I was nervous. What if I made him worse? Then I realized it was already as bad as it can be. I counseled Florence that this may be permanent, and I’d never heard of a dog reversing this.

But Florence has so much love and compassion for these little dogs, I explained what I was doing and showed her how to do it.

Florence went to a different vet who prescribed steroids to see if it would do anything. Perhaps that helped with swelling, but with my technique that Florence did religiously, a miracle did occur. Feeling began to return to Tatum’s paralyzed legs.

I was shocked. So was everybody. Florence kept up the body work and each time I saw them, I would work on him and some little thing would improve. Once, he lifted his leg to pee. Another time he stepped up on something. So, the body work was a major influence.

Today our miracle boy is bouncing around like a normal dog. Florence continues the massage. I contribute from time to time.

But, while we are all just amazed at this miracle, the bottom line is we really need to research this.

While I have concentrated on horses, all the knowledge they have taught me, I transferred to the dogs.

And all my techniques began to evolve in 1978, when I began working in a large chiropractic clinic where we truly were trained by the doctors in physical therapies and injuries.

I really want to explore this condition to see if it can be reproduced. If anyone feels they would like to contribute money to help make this happen, I would love to set up a research project.”
